On the day of Ashura, Imam Hussain (peace be upon him) requested from his sister a worn and humble garment so that after his martyrdom, none would covet or plunder it. In response, Lady Zaynab (peace be upon her) brought forth the very blessed shirt that her mother, the noble daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), had entrusted to her before her passing.
According to narrations, three days prior to her martyrdom, Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her) handed to her daughter Zaynab (peace be upon her) a heavenly garment—a shirt created by Allah in Paradise, passed down through the Prophets, from Adam (peace be upon him) to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and finally to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family).
On that day, Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) gave her daughter the shirt of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and said,
“When your brother Hussain (peace be upon him) asks you for this shirt, know that the hour of his departure has arrived—he will not remain with you for long. Soon, in the most tragic of circumstances, he will be slain by the offspring of transgression.”
It is narrated that the prophets, when faced with great trials, would seek divine aid and solace through this blessed garment. Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) thus instructed her daughter to deliver it to her brother in the final moments of the Day of Ashura, when his sacred mission would reach its heart-rending conclusion.
