Public Office as a Trust

Selections of writings of The Commander of the Faithful (pbuh) and his letters to his enemies and the governors of his provinces including selections of his diplomas of appointment of his officers and his injunctions to the members of his family and his companions.

This letter highlights that authority in Islam is not a privilege for personal gain but a divine trust demanding vigilance and justice.

He (peace be upon him) wrote:

“This governorship is not a means of sustenance for you, but a trust placed upon your neck. Know that you are under the watch of your superior. You have no right to act tyrannically toward the people, nor to engage in critical matters without certainty. What rests in your hand is a portion of the wealth of God Almighty, and you are one of His treasurers. You must preserve it until you deliver it to me. I pray that I may not prove a harsh master to you. Peace.”
