A letter from Imam Ali (peace be upon him) to Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali, when he sent him to Muawiya as a final proof
In this directive, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) instructs his envoy Jarir to deliver a decisive ultimatum to Muawiya: either pledge allegiance or prepare for war.
He (peace be upon him) wrote:
“Now then, when my letter reaches you, summon Muawiya to a final judgment and press him to a clear and definite choice. Place before him two paths only: a war that will scatter and ruin, or a surrender that will bring him humiliation. If he chooses war, declare war against him. If he chooses peace and safety, take from him the pledge of allegiance. Peace.”
