Birth in the Sacred House of God “Kaaba”

Among all the sons of Adam, none has been granted the honor bestowed upon the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him). His blessed birth took place within the sanctified walls of the Kaaba, a distinction unique in human history—never shared by any before him and never to be repeated after him.

This sacred event stands as a divine testimony to his exalted station, for no other cradle was deemed worthy of carrying the heir to the Prophet’s light except the very House of God itself.

The Reflection of Prophetic Virtues

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) gathered within himself the virtues and graces of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) more perfectly than any other soul. He grew up under the Prophet’s care, drinking from the fountain of his wisdom, nourished by his moral teachings, and shaped by his sublime character.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) showered him with counsel until his character reached the highest station of moral refinement, and his conduct attained the loftiest ranks of spiritual nobility. These virtues remained alive within him until his final breath, making him the living embodiment of the Prophet’s light.

The Boundless Greatness of Imam Ali

The discourse on Imam Ali (peace be upon him) knows no boundary. Volumes upon volumes cannot encompass his reality, nor can centuries exhaust the measure of his virtues. Yet, as the sages say, “What cannot be comprehended in full should not be abandoned in whole.” Thus, even a glimpse of his traits suffices to guide seekers toward God and to provide mankind with a model of life, death, and eternal faithfulness.

The Miraculous Birth in the Kaaba

Narrations tell us that when the hour of delivery came, Lady Fatima bint Asad, mother of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), stood before the Kaaba in prayer. With hands raised to the heavens, she invoked Allah with these words:

“O My God, I believe in You, in the message of Your Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), in Your prophets and revelations, and in the word of my forefather Abraham, Your intimate friend who raised this House. By the sanctity of this House, by him who built it, and by the child within my womb—who speaks to me and comforts me—I beseech You: make my delivery easy.”

At that moment, the wall of the Kaaba split open by divine command. She entered and remained within for three days, sustained by the fruits of Paradise. On the third day, she emerged carrying her newborn son. A heavenly voice proclaimed:

“O Fatima! Name him Ali, I am the Highest. I created him by My power, raised him in My honor, and derived his name from Mine. He is My servant, nurtured by My guidance, entrusted with My message, and made heir to My knowledge. He is the Imam after My beloved Muhammad. Blessed is the one who loves him, and woe to the one who opposes him.”

The First Signs of Divine Favor

When Abu Talib beheld his son, the infant greeted him with words of peace. Soon after, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family) entered, and the newborn smiled and addressed him with reverence and love. By divine permission, the infant then recited the opening verses of Surat al-Mu’minun, declaring the success of the faithful.

The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) affirmed: “Indeed, the believers have prospered through you, O Ali. You are their leader and their guide.”

It is narrated that when Lady Fatima bint Asad hesitated to leave her son in order to deliver the news to Hamza, the Prophet assured her, “I will nourish him.” Placing his blessed tongue in the child’s mouth, twelve springs of sustenance flowed forth—an event that gave that day its name: the Day of Trawiya (“the day of quenching”).

That very night, a radiant light shone from the infant Ali (peace be upon him), rising from the Kaaba to the heavens, heralding the advent of a life that would illuminate the earth with justice, sacrifice, and truth.

The Date of Birth

The Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), was born on Friday, the thirteenth of Rajab, in the thirtieth year after the Year of the Elephant, corresponding to thirty years after the blessed birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

The birth of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) in the very heart of the Sacred House remains a sign of his unmatched nearness to God, a prelude to a life of divine service, and an eternal light for all who seek truth.
