The Noble Wives of the Commander of the Faithful

Historians unanimously affirm that the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), never took another wife during the lifetime of the Lady of Purity, Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her).

Historians unanimously affirm that the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), never took another wife during the lifetime of the Lady of Purity, Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her).

Indeed, she is the foremost among all his wives, the Mistress of the Women of the Worlds, from the beginning of creation to eternity, and the Queen of the Women of Paradise, the beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

After her passing, Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was later joined in marriage to several noble women, among them:

  • Khawlah bint Jafar ibn Qays al-Khathamiyyah al-Hanafiyyah, the mother of Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah.
  • Umm Habib bint Rabi‘ah.
  • Umm al-Banin Fatimah bint Hizam ibn Khalid al-Kilabiyyah, the honorable mother of al-Abbas (peace be upon him) and his three valiant brothers.
  • Layla bint Masud al-Darimiyyah.
  • Asma bint Umays al-Khathamiyyah.
  • Umm Said bint Urwah ibn Masud al-Thaqafiyyah.
  • Ummamah bint Abul-As, granddaughter of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
  • Mahayyah bint Imru al-Qays.

The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) never married during the life of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her); only after her martyrdom, and in accordance with her own will, did he marry Ummamah bint Zaynab, the Prophet’s granddaughter and the noble daughter of Lady Khadijah al-Kubra (peace be upon her).

Among his wives, Ummamah, Umm al-Banin, Asma, and Layla outlived the Imam (peace be upon him) and continued their lives after his martyrdom.
