Numerous verses in the Holy Quran refer—directly or indirectly—to Imam Amir al-Muminin (The Commander of the Faithful), Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), affirming his divine status and unique position in Islam.
The Verse of Guardianship (Ayat al-Wilayah)
“Your guardian is only Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe—those who establish prayer and give alms while bowing in prayer.”
This verse was revealed concerning Imam Ali (peace be upon him), when he gave his ring in charity while in the state of bowing during prayer.
The Verse of Proclamation (Ayat al-Tabligh)
“O Messenger! Convey that which has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.”
This verse was revealed on the day of Ghadir Khumm, commanding the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) to proclaim the divine authority and virtues of Imam Ali (peace be upon him).
The Verse of Purification (Ayat al-Tathir)
“Indeed, Allah desires to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you thoroughly.”
This verse was revealed about the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them)—the Prophet Muhammad, Imam Ali, Lady Fatima al-Zahra, Imam Hassan, and Imam Hussain (peace be upon them all).
The Verse of Affection (Ayat al-Mawaddah)
“Say: ‘I ask of you no reward for it except love for my near relatives.”
This verse calls believers to love and devotion toward the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them)—Imam Ali, Lady Fatima al-Zahra, Imam Hassan, and Imam Hussain (peace be upon them).
The Verse of the Night of Migration (Ayat Laylat al-Mabit)
“And among the people is he who sells himself seeking the pleasure of Allah, and Allah is kind to His servants.”
This verse was revealed about Imam Ali (peace be upon him) when he slept in the bed of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) on the night of migration, risking his life to protect the Messenger of God.
The Verse of Mutual Invocation (Ayat al-Mubahalah)
“Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves; then let us pray earnestly and invoke the curse of Allah upon the liars.”
On the day of Mubahalah, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) brought Imam Ali, Lady Fatima, Imam al-Hasan, and Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon them) as his family, demonstrating their exalted position in Islam.
The Verse of Adam’s Repentance (Ayat al-Tawbah of Adam)
“Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful.”
According to narrations, Adam (peace be upon him) sought forgiveness by invoking the names of Muhammad, Ali, Fatima, Hassan, and Hussain (peace be upon them).
The Verse of Abraham’s Trial (Ayat al-Ibtala’)
“[Allah] said: I will make you an Imam for the people. [Abraham] said, “And of my descendants?” [Allah] said, “My covenant does not include the wrongdoers.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said, “This promise was fulfilled in me and my brother Ali. Neither of us ever bowed to an idol; Allah made me a prophet and Ali my successor.”
The Verse of Affection and Love (Ayat al-Wudd)
“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds—the Most Merciful will appoint for them love.”
The divinely inspired love referred to in this verse is the love and guardianship of Imam Ali (peace be upon him).
The Verse of Guidance (Ayat al-Hadi)
“You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide.”
Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) explained, “The Messenger of Allah is the warner, and Ali is the guide. Every Imam after him is the guide for his time.”
