Infallibility is a defining attribute of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), affirmed by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) in numerous authentic traditions. It denotes complete immunity from sin, error, and forgetfulness in speech, action, and intention, and is a core pillar of leadership and Imamate in Shiite theology.
The infallibility of the 12 Imams, foremost among them Imam Ali (peace be upon him), is supported by both transmitted and rational evidence, as well as clear Quranic testimony.
Below are among the most prominent proofs demonstrating this divine perfection.
-
The Verse of Purification
“Indeed, Allah desires to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you thoroughly.” Al-Ahzab: 33
This verse, which explicitly declares the absolute purity of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), conveys the very essence of Infallibility —freedom from every form of sin and defilement.
-
The Verse of Obedience
“O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and those vested with authority among you.” Al-Nisa: 59
The verse enjoins unconditional obedience.
Absolute obedience, when placed alongside obedience to Allah and His Messenger, logically necessitates infallibility; for if a human being could err or sin, such obedience would not be categorically commanded.
Thus, by Quranic logic, infallibility is an indispensable quality of those whom God designates as guides and leaders.
Prophetic Traditions Affirming the Infallibility of Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him)
The Hadith of Thaqalayn (The Two Weighty Trusts)
The Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) said:
“I leave among you two precious trusts: the Book of Allah and my Ahl al-Bayt. They shall never be separated until they return to me at the Pond of Kawthar.”
Their inseparability from the Quran — which is itself protected from falsehood — demonstrates that the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) are likewise immune from error and impurity.
The Hadith of Ghadir Khumm
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) declared:
“Whoever I am his master, Ali is his master. O Allah, befriend those who love him and oppose those who oppose him.”
Since master in Islam is one whose obedience is divinely obligatory, such authority can only belong to a person who is entirely free from error and sin.
The Saying of the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him and His Family)
“Ali is with the Quran, and the Quran is with Ali. They shall never separate until they return to me at the Pond.”
Unity with the Quran — the infallible word of God — is itself proof of Ali’s divine impeccability.
The Testimony of Imam al-Sadiq (Peace Be Upon Him)
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) stated:
“We are the infallible ones. Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has commanded obedience to us and forbidden disobedience toward us.”
Another Prophetic Declaration
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said:
“Whoever desires to live as I have lived, to die as I will die, and to dwell in the Garden of Eternity that my God has prepared, let him accept the authority of Ali after me, love his followers, and follow the Imams from among his progeny. They are of my essence and are endowed with my knowledge. Woe to those of my nation who deny them — they shall be deprived of my intercession.”
Rational Proofs of the Imam’s Infallibility
The rational argument for the infallibility of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) is the same as that for the infallibility of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family).
>Just as divine wisdom precludes sending a prophet susceptible to sin or error, it equally precludes appointing an Imam who might deviate or mislead.
Reason dictates that divine guidance—whose purpose is the perfection and salvation of humankind—must come through one who is absolutely trustworthy, free from ignorance, forgetfulness, falsehood, and disobedience. Only such a guide can be the true conduit of divine will and the guardian of revelation.
