Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her), who strove steadfastly to defend the divine right of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and to protest against the unlawful seizure of leadership, endured immense physical and emotional suffering. After the tragic events that followed the passing of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his family), the aggressors stormed her house, causing grievous harm and leading to the violent miscarriage of her unborn child.
While bedridden, Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) addressed the women of Madinah in a speech that combined moral protest, theological defense, and profound foresight regarding the future of the Muslim community. This address, preserved in both Sunni and Shia traditions, stands as one of the most eloquent and moving expressions of truth and justice in Islamic history.
The Significance of the Sermon
Scholars of Islam have described this sermon as a masterpiece of eloquence and moral clarity. Delivered after the usurpation of Imam Ali’s (peace be upon him) rightful position, the sermon powerfully highlights the virtues and unmatched qualities of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) and laments the community’s loss for abandoning him.
Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) admonished the people for their betrayal of divine guidance, warning of the grave consequences that would befall a nation that turned away from the rightful leadership ordained by God. Her words, rich in wisdom and righteous indignation, serve as both a moral testament and a historical warning.
An Excerpt from the Sermon
Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) said:
“By Allah, I rose this morning detesting your world and distancing myself from your men. I tested them at the first trial and found them wanting. Woe to those whose swords grew dull and whose hearts grew weak, who turned justice into tyranny and truth into deceit. Woe unto them! They displaced the caliphate from the lofty summits of prophethood and from the firm foundations of divine revelation, entrusting it to those unworthy of its weight. Know indeed, this is a manifest loss!”
She continued, explaining why the people turned away from Imam Ali (peace be upon him):
“What did they find dislikable in Abu al-Hasan, Ali (peace be upon him)? By Allah, they were displeased with the sharpness of his sword, his strength in upholding divine commands, and his unwavering stand for the truth. Had they entrusted the leadership to him as the Messenger of Allah had decreed, he would have guided them with gentleness and led them to the rivers of righteousness and abundance. But they rejected the truth and preferred blindness over guidance. Soon shall they be requited for what their hands have wrought.”
And in her prophetic warning, she declared:
“By the Eternal God, the storm of tribulation has already begun to brew! Wait but a little, and you shall drink from a cup brimming with blood and bitterness. Then will the people of falsehood lose all they have built, and the coming generations will reap the sorrow sown by their forefathers.”
Reaction of the Companions
When the women of Madinah conveyed her words to their husbands among the Muhajirun and Ansar, a group of them came to Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) seeking forgiveness, saying:
“O Daughter of the Messenger of Allah, had Ali (peace be upon him) spoken to us before the pledge, we would not have turned away from him.”
Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) replied with firm resolve:
“Enough! There is no excuse for your neglect and no justification for your betrayal.
Your excuses are hollow, and your repentance is too late.”
A Testament of Moral Foresight
In her final days, Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her) uttered no complaint about her suffering. Her concern was solely for the fate of Islam and the future of the Muslim Ummah. Her sermon stands as a timeless defense of divine truth, a cry against injustice, and a warning for generations to come—a voice of truth that continues to echo through the corridors of faith and history.
