Signs of the Appearance and the Profile of the Companions of the Promised Mahdi in the Words of Amir Al-Muminin

The signs of the Appearance refer to events that occur in close proximity to the advent or uprising of the Promised Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance). In Shia teachings, these signs are classified into two categories: definite (inevitable) and non-definite (conditional).

In Shia thought, the issue of the Appearance of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) is not limited to knowing its signs alone; rather, it is inseparably linked to the preparedness of individuals who will shoulder the responsibility of establishing global justice. Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) emphasized that the exact time of the Appearance is unknown, yet it is accompanied by clear signs. In narrations attributed to him, two pre-Appearance signs are highlighted.

The Heavenly Call

The Heavenly Call, or the Celestial Cry, is among the definite signs of the Appearance. It is a call that will be heard from the sky. Abu Ruman narrates from Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) that he said:

“When a caller from the heavens proclaims that the truth is indeed with the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), the name of al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) will be spoken everywhere. The world will be filled with his name to the extent that no other name will be mentioned besides his.”

Calamities During the Time of the Appearance

Although many of the natural disasters and hardships faced by people in the end times appear, on the surface, to have material and natural causes, they are in reality the inevitable consequences of sins that disrupt the order of nature and provoke divine wrath.

Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) warned of such calamities occurring near the time of the Appearance. Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), narrating from his forefathers and from Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him), stated:

“When fire erupts in the Hijaz and floods flow through Najaf, then await the Appearance of the Qaim (may God hasten his noble reappearance).”

The signs of the Appearance reflect the social and spiritual climate preceding it—a period of intense trial. Only those endowed with firm faith, religious insight, and practical readiness will be capable of standing among the companions of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance).

Their Number

The companions of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) are those who will support him during his uprising and in establishing the global government of justice. Most narrations specify their number as 313, corresponding to the companions of Badr.

Their Gathering

Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), quoting the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), described how these companions will gather around the Imam to initiate the global uprising:

“God will bring together the supporters of al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance), in less than the blink of an eye, from the east and the west of the earth, beside the Kaaba.”

The Elite Companions

The companions of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) are of different ranks. The first group consists of the 313 chosen individuals who form the core of the uprising and are known as his elite companions. They are described in narrations as the leaders and governors of the earth.

A second, larger group comprises those who subsequently join them and operate under their leadership. Regarding the elite companions, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) said:

“No one from the past has preceded them, nor will anyone from the future attain their lofty rank.”

The Characteristics of the Companions

Most of the elite companions are young, with very few elderly among them. In this regard, Hakim ibn Sad narrates from Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him):

“The companions of al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) are all young; no old man is found among them except as little as kohl in the eye or salt in food—and it is well known that salt is the smallest portion of a meal.”

Devout by Night, Lions by Day

Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), describing the strength of will, faith, devotion, and unity of the companions of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance), said:

“When the Qaim rises, his companions—numbering the same as the companions of Badr and Talut, three hundred and thirteen—will gather around him. They are like lions emerging from their dens and like solid pieces of iron; if they will it, they can uproot mountains from their foundations.
They are those through whom God is worshipped in His oneness by means of the al-Mahdi. At night, they wail in reverent fear of God like mourning women, and through constant devotion they spend their nights in prayer and their days in fasting. It is as though they were raised by a single father and mother, for their hearts are united in love, compassion, and sincere goodwill toward one another.”
