Amir Al-Muminin on Occultation

A Narration from Amir Al-Muminin on the Era of Occultation

The occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) refers to the concealment of the final and twelfth Imam, the successor of the Messenger of Islam, from public sight.

During the period of occultation, although the physical presence of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) is hidden from people due to existing dangers or other divine considerations, his knowledge is not concealed. His teachings remain firmly established in the hearts and souls of the faithful, and people continue to live in accordance with his guidance and instructions.

The Meaning of Occultation

Occultation refers to the concealed life of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance), the twelfth Imam of the Shia. According to Shia belief, by God’s permission and divine wisdom, he was concealed from public view in the year 329 AH and, by God’s command, will remain in occultation until the time of his reappearance—an event whose timing is known only to God.

In his sermons and narrated traditions, Imam Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) addressed the issue of the occultation of the Awaited al-Mahdi in several stages, elucidating events that would unfold in the future.

The Final Divine Proof

In a narration reported by Asbagh ibn Nubatah, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), after introducing the final divine proof on earth, explained the principle of his occultation as follows:

“One day I entered upon Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) and found him deeply immersed in thought, a state that greatly surprised me, for I had never seen him thus before. I said, ‘O Commander of the Faithful, has something occurred that I see you so troubled and absorbed in reflection?’

He replied: ‘I am reflecting upon a son who will be born from my lineage. He will be the eleventh of my descendants. He is the al-Mahdi of the Ahl al-Bayt, who will fill the earth with justice and equity after it has been filled with oppression and corruption. Yet before that, he will experience a period of occultation, during which many people will deviate from the truth and the straight path.’”

The Bewilderment of the People

The era of the occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) is marked by severe intellectual and doctrinal trials—many of which can be clearly observed in our time.

Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) referred in several narrations to the challenges of belief during this era:

“Our Qaim will have an occultation of long duration. During that time, I see the Shia wandering like a shepherdless flock scattered across the desert, searching for pasture but unable to find it. They will seek him, yet they will not find him. Be aware: whoever among them remains steadfast in faith and unwavering in belief, and whose heart does not harden due to the prolonged absence of his Imam, shall be with me on the Day of Resurrection, in the very station where I stand.”

The Prolonged Occultation

Imam Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) also spoke of the length of the occultation and the despair and tribulations associated with that time.

In a narration reported by Asbagh ibn Nubatah, he said:

“Be aware! He will have an occultation so prolonged that the ignorant—those unaware of divine wisdom and purpose—will say: ‘God has no need for the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).’”

In another narration, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) stated:

“Al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) will live for many long years in concealment from the people, such that even the most skilled tracker will not discern his trace, no matter how diligently he searches for signs.”

The Causes of the Occultation of Imam al-Mahdi

A careful examination of the narrations concerning the occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) reveals several divine wisdoms behind this prolonged absence:

Protection from Allegiance to Tyrants

Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) said regarding Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance):

“Indeed, when He rises, no allegiance to any tyrant will rest upon his neck. For this reason, his birth will occur in secrecy, and his existence will remain concealed from the sight of the people.”

Oppression Inflicted upon the Descendants of Amir al-Muminin

Imam Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) described the hardships of the era of occultation as even more severe than the period of confusion endured by the people of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him), attributing these trials to the oppression inflicted upon his descendants. While Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon them) were present, he addressed the people saying:

“O people! Be aware—by God, I and these two sons of mine shall be martyred. Thereafter, God will bring forth a man from my progeny at the end of time to avenge our blood from the oppressors. He will be concealed from public sight so that those who follow misguidance may be distinguished from others. His occultation will be so prolonged that the ignorant will say: ‘God has no plan concerning the family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).’”

People’s Oppression of Their Own Selves

Regarding the necessity of the divine proof in the order of existence, Imam Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) alluded to the reason for the occultation in the following words. Mufaddal ibn Umar narrates from Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him):

“One day, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) delivered a sermon from the pulpit of the Mosque of Kufa and said: ‘O people! Know that the earth will never be devoid of God’s proof. However, God—exalted is He—will soon deprive people of seeing His proof due to the oppression and transgression they commit, and the excesses they inflict upon themselves.’”

Preserving the Signs of Guidance

Just as God, in His wisdom, conceals the Imam when people fail to appreciate the immense divine blessing of an infallible guide, this concealment serves to preserve the order of the world, ensure the continued descent of divine grace through him, and keep the door of guidance toward God open.

In this regard, Imam Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) stated:

“God will preserve His proofs among the people—whether manifest or concealed, or even when they live in fear—so that His clear and decisive signs of guidance and salvation may never be extinguished.”
