Quranic Educational Programs for Women at the Imam Ali Holy Shrine

The Quranic Institute of the Imam Ali Holy Shrine has inaugurated a series of specialized educational initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s engagement with the Quran through structured learning programs.

Scope and Structure of Programs

The programs address diverse aspects of Quranic learning, including memorization, correct recitation (tajwid), rulings related to recitation, as well as methods of reflection and contemplation (tadabbur). Participation has extended across wide social strata, notably among female university students and community members.

Specialized Online Courses

According to Zaman al-Ebrahimi, Director of Women’s Quranic Education at the Institute, the Women’s Division implemented multiple online courses in the current year. Among them was the Siddiqa al-Kubra program, dedicated to correct recitation, which employed the “segmentation method”—a pedagogical approach designed to simplify mastery of recitation. The course attracted over 600 female participants, both within Iraq and internationally, and was organized into fifteen groups instructed by faculty members and volunteer graduates of previous cohorts. The program’s stated objective was to cultivate a cadre of qualified female instructors.

Additional online offerings included courses on Quranic Miracles (Ijaz Qurani), Quranic Sciences (Ulum al-Quran), and the al-Zahra program for the memorization of Surah al-Baqara. Another notable initiative, entitled Karavan al-Nur (Caravan of Light), divided its participants into twenty-one instructional groups.

In-Person Memorization Programs

The Institute also organized in-person sessions, including the Kawthar Memorization Program, which hosted twenty-nine students. Participants were assigned sections of the Quran in a phased memorization scheme. In recognition of their efforts, the Holy Shrine provided both financial and non-financial incentives to encourage further progress.

Summer Courses

Complementary summer programs targeted school students, university students, and children of Shrine employees. These courses combined instruction in recitation, tajwid rulings, reflective reading, and introductory exegesis, alongside structured memorization exercises.

Institutional Significance

As emphasized by al-Ebrahimi, these initiatives align with the Shrine’s broader strategic orientation toward cultivating a generation of capable women devoted to Quranic sciences and pedagogy. By integrating both traditional and digital platforms, the programs aim to strengthen female participation in religious learning and to institutionalize Quranic culture across diverse segments of society.
