Abu al-Hassan

The most well-known kunya of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) is Abu al-Hassan. Other notable kunyas include Abu al-Hussain and Abu al-Sibtain (the Father of the Two Grandsons).

Abu al-Raihanatain

The title Abu al-Raihanatain refers to Imam Ali (peace be upon him) as the Father of the Two Blossoms of Paradise—Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain (peace be upon them).
Before his passing, the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to him:

“Peace be upon you, O Abu al-Raihanatain. I entrust you with the care of these two blossoms of mine in this world.”

Abu Turab

The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) also bestowed upon Imam Ali (peace be upon him) the title Abu Turab—the Father of Dust.
When the Prophet saw him prostrating with his face resting upon the earth, he said lovingly:

“Sit up, O Abu Turab.”
The narrator reports:
“By God, no name was dearer or more beloved to Imam Ali (peace be upon him) than this one.”

Abu al-A’immah

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) is also called Abu al-A’immah—the Father of the 11 Imams—for all the infallible 11 Imams who succeeded him were from his blessed lineage.
This title is derived from the words of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) during the event of Ghadir, when he declared:

“O people, Ali is from me and I am from Ali… He is the best of the successors, the husband of the Lady of the Women of the Worlds, and the father of the rightly guided Imams.”

The Noble Titles of Imam Ali (peace be upon him)

The titles of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) are many, just as his virtues are beyond measure. Each title reflects his divine stature, spiritual perfection, and unparalleled character. Among these exalted titles are

Haidar

One of the most renowned titles of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) is Haidar (the Lion).
In one of the battles, the Imam declared:

“I am the one whom my mother named Haidar.”
This title embodies both majesty and awe, instilling reverence in every heart.

Al-Murtadha

A sacred tradition narrates:

“Fatimah (peace be upon her) was pleased with Ali (peace be upon him), and Ali was pleased with Fatimah. Ali is the one whose words and deeds are accepted by God, the Exalted — the one who is content with his Lord and with whom the Lord is well pleased.”

Bab Madinat al-Ilm (The Gate of the City of Knowledge)

Concerning this title, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:

“I am the City of Knowledge, and Ali is its Gate. Whoever seeks knowledge must enter through this gate.”

Amir al-Muminin (The Commander of the Faithful)

The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) granted Imam Ali (peace be upon him) the unique title Amir al-Mu’minin, saying:

“Send blessings upon Ali, for he is the Commander of the Faithful.”

This title is exclusive to Imam Ali (peace be upon him); not even the other Imams or infallibles bore it.

Among the other titles bestowed upon him by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) are
Sayed al-Muslimin (Master of the Muslims),
Imam al-Muttaqin (Leader of the God-conscious),
Qaid al-Ghurar al-Muhajjalin (Leader of the Radiant Ones),
Sayed al-Arab (Master of the Arabs),
Sayed al-Awsiya (Chief of the Successors), and
Yasub al-Muminin (The Leader of the Believers).

Other distinguished titles include:
Waliyyullah (Friend of God),
Habibullah (Beloved of God),
‘Abdullah (Servant of God),
Asadullah (The Lion of God),
Sayfullah (The Sword of God),
Wasi Rasulullah (The Successor of the Messenger of God),
Khalifat Rasulullah (The Caliph of the Messenger of God),
Akh Rasulullah (The Brother of the Messenger of God),
Waziruhu (His Minister),
Fata Quraysh (The Noble Youth of Quraysh),
Qasim al-Jannati wal-Nar (The Divider of Paradise and Hell),
al-Siddiq al-Akbar (The Greatest Truthful One),
