The Blessed Children of Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him)

Historians differ regarding the exact number of the noble children of Imam Ali (peace be upon him).

Some accounts mention twenty-seven, others twenty-eight, thirty-three, thirty-four, thirty-five, or even thirty-nine.
This variation may stem from the overlap of names, titles, and honorifics across historical records.

However, it is unanimously agreed that from Lady Fatima al-Zahra (peace be upon her)—the beloved daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)—Imam Ali (peace be upon him) had five children:

  • Imam al-Hassan (peace be upon him)

  • Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon him)

  • Lady Zaynab (peace be upon her)

  • Lady Umm Kalthum (may God be pleased with her)

  • Muhsin, who was martyred before birth during the assault on the house of Lady Fatima (peace be upon her).

Scholars have also differed on the number of daughters Imam Ali (peace be upon him) had from Lady Fatima (peace be upon her).
Some hold that she bore one daughter, Lady Zaynab (peace be upon her), while others believe there were two.

From Lady Umm al-Banin, Fatima bint Hizam al-Kilabiyah (peace be upon her), Imam Ali (peace be upon him) had four sons:

  • Al-Abbas (peace be upon him)

  • Uthman

  • Abdullah

  • Jafar

— all of whom were martyred on the Day of Karbala alongside Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon him).

Other noble children include:

  • Abu Bakr and Ubaydullah were both martyred at Karbala; their mother was Layla bint Masud al-Darimiyah.

  • Muhammad al-Asghar was martyred in Karbala; his mother was a freed bondwoman known as al-Zarqa (Umm Walad).

  • Yahya and Awn, whose mother was Asma bint Umays.

  • Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, whose mother was Khawlah bint Jafar ibn Qays.

  • Muhammad al-Awsat, whose mother was Ummamah bint Abul-As.

  • Umar, whose mother was Ṣahba al-Taghlibiyah (Umm Habib).

Some historians also mention another son named Umar, who was martyred in Karbala.

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) was also blessed with several daughters whose names are recorded as follows:

  • Ruqayyah

  • Um al-Hassan

  • Um, Hani,

  • Fatimah

  • Zaynab al-Sughra

  • Maymunah

  • Nafisah

  • Khadijah

  • Ummamah

  • Ramlah al-Kubra

  • Jumanah

  • Um Salamah

  • Ruqayyah al-Sughra

  • Um Kalthum al-Sughra

  • Ramlah al-Sughra

  • Um Karam

  • Um, Jafar.

It is also said that Sukaynah may be counted among his noble daughters.
