The statements of Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) clearly establish his status as the final Proof of God and the continuer of the line of Imamate. This rank signifies the continuity of divine guidance until the Day of Resurrection.
Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) was born at dawn on the fifteenth of Shaban in the year 255 AH in Samarra. After the martyrdom of his father, Imam al-Hasan al-Askari (peace be upon him), he assumed the Imamate at the age of five. Following the period of the Minor Occultation, he has remained in the Major Occultation until the present day.
Lineage and Descent
Numerous narrations attributed to Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) describe the lineage of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance). In some reports, he is described as a descendant of Amir al-Muminin himself; in others, as being from the progeny of Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her); and in a further set of narrations, as descending from Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon him).
In a sermon delivered after the Battle of Nahrawan, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) identified the al-Mahdi of this nation as one of his descendants and counted this among the greatest divine blessings.
Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (peace be upon him) relates that Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), upon returning to Kufa after Nahrawan, praised God, invoked blessings upon the soul of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), enumerated the favors bestowed upon the Messenger and upon himself, and then declared
“Among the blessings God has granted me is that the al-Mahdi of this nation is from my progeny.”
Zir ibn Hubaysh reports from Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him):
“The al-Mahdi is a man from us, the People of the Household, and from the descendants of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (peace be upon her).”
In another narration, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) addressed Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon him), saying:
“The ninth of your descendants is the al-Mahdi, the one who shall rise and is the true savior.”
He also stated concerning him:
“He is the remainder of the proofs of God and a successor from among the successors of the Messenger of God.”
Noble House and Ancestry
Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) employed various expressions to describe the noble household of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance), each highlighting a particular dimension of his luminous identity. These expressions are not contradictory; rather, they illuminate different aspects of a single, radiant truth.
In one narration he said:
“The al-Mahdi is from Quraysh.”
In another report, Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon him) narrates that a man asked Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) about the al-Mahdi. He replied that when the corrupt have vanished, the people of faith have become few, and turmoil has subsided, then he will appear. When asked about his lineage, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) said:
“He is from Bani Hashim, the noblest of the Arab clans and the pinnacle of honor and chivalry.”
He also stated:
“Indeed, the Imams are all from Quraysh, whose tree has been planted in the house of Bani Hashim. Leadership and Imamate are not fitting for others.”
Another narration reports:
“The al-Mahdi is from the progeny of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family).”
Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) further said:
“The Night of Decree occurs every year, in which the affairs of the year descend, and for this matter there are guardians after the Messenger of God. They are myself and eleven from my loins, who are divinely inspired Imams.”
His Blessed Name
In the words of Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), reference to the name of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) appears in three ways: at times it is not explicitly mentioned; at times it is alluded to indirectly; and at other times it is stated openly.
During periods of dissimulation and fear of the enemy, his name was not disclosed. Jabir ibn Yazid al-Jufi reports that Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said that when Umar ibn al-Khattab asked Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) about the name of the al-Mahdi, he replied:
“I will not state his name, for my beloved and intimate friend, the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family), took a covenant from me not to disclose it until God brings him forth and manifests him.”
Bearing the Name of the Final Prophet
Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) stated:
“The al-Mahdi will be born in Madinah. He is from the Household of the Messenger of God and bears the same name as one of the prophets.”
In another narration he said explicitly:
“The name of the al-Mahdi is Muhammad.”
Physical Appearance
Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) described the outward features of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) as follows:
“He is a man with a broad and radiant forehead, a well-proportioned nose, a moderately full abdomen, and wide thighs. His teeth are white and gleaming, and on his right thigh there is a distinguishing mark.”
In another narration, he is described as a handsome, broad-shouldered youth, with hair falling upon his shoulders, whose radiant face outshines the darkness of his hair and beard, and who is the son of the noblest of women.
Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) reports that Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), while on the pulpit, said:
“In the end of times, a man from his descendants will appear, fair in complexion with a reddish hue, broad-chested and strong-shouldered, bearing two marks on his back, one matching his skin color and the other resembling the mark of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his family).”
Moral and Spiritual Character
Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) surpasses all believers in compassion and knowledge. Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) said of his character:
“His sanctuary is the most expansive in granting refuge to the destitute, his knowledge is the most abundant, and he is the most attentive to maintaining family ties. O God, make his pledge the end of all sorrows, and through his capable hands transform the division of the Islamic nation into unity.”
In another narration, Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) said:
“He wears the armor of knowledge, having fully comprehended it with all its etiquettes, awareness, and insight.”
Solitude and Occultation
For the preservation of his life and the continuation of the path of Imamate, Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance) lives in anonymity. Asbagh ibn Nubatah reports that Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) said:
“The Master of the Command, the al-Mahdi, resides in distant lands, withdraws from among the people, and lives in solitude.”
The narrations of Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) present a clear and well-grounded portrait of the lineage, household, and defining characteristics of Imam al-Mahdi (may God hasten his noble reappearance). They establish Mahdism as a deeply rooted reality within the tradition of the Ahl al-Bayt and as the continuation of the line of Imamate. Accordingly, true recognition of the Imam of the Age lays the foundation for an authentic understanding of awaiting and for preparedness to realize the divine promise.
