The State of Amir al-Muminin After the Passing of Lady Fatimah Al-Zahra

When the news of the martyrdom of Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) reached Amir al-Muminin, Imam Ali (peace be upon him), he walked from the mosque to his home with such heaviness and sorrow that he nearly fell from exhaustion.

He instructed Asma to take al-Hasan and al-Hussain (peace be upon them) to him and inform him of the passing of their mother.

The Fainting of Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) in the Mosque

Ibn Abbas narrates:

“When Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) attained martyrdom, Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Hussain (peace be upon them) ran out of the house crying:
‘O Muhammad! O Ahmad! Today that our mother has passed away, your own loss in death has been renewed for us.’

They then informed Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him), who was in the mosque. Upon hearing this heart-wrenching news, he fainted. Water was poured over him to revive him, after which he took al-Hasan and al-Hussain in his arms and went to Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her). Asma was weeping at her side, saying,
‘O orphans of Muhammad, we consoled ourselves over the calamity of your grandfather through Fatimah, so after Fatimah, to whom shall we turn for solace?'”

Amir al-Muminin’s Lamentation to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)

When Amir al-Muminin (peace be upon him) laid Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) to rest, as his hand rose from the soil of the grave, an overwhelming grief swept over him, and tears streamed down his face. He then turned toward the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) and said:

“O Messenger of Allah, peace be upon you, and peace be upon you from your daughter, your beloved, the light of your eyes, your visitor, and the one who rests in your blessed grave. The One whom Allah chose to reunite with you early. O Messenger of Allah, my patience in the separation from your chosen daughter has diminished, and my strength has weakened in the loss of the leader of women.

Truly, the trust was returned, the captive was received, and Fatimah was quickly taken from me. Soon, your daughter will inform you of the collusion of your Ummah against me and the usurpation of her rights. Seek her condition, for she bore many burning sorrows in her heart that she could not express. Yet she will soon reveal them, and indeed, Allah is the ultimate Judge, and He is the best of judges.”
