The Engineering Design Unit of the Shrine’s Engineering and Technical Affairs Department has begun preparing the plans for the new main entrance to Najaf Al-Ashraf’s historic district.
The project aims to redevelop one of the principal gateways surrounding the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali (peace be upon him), while preserving the city’s architectural identity, improving traffic flow, and enhancing security services.
Mustafa Mahbouba, Head of the Engineering and Technical Affairs Department, told the Shrine’s News Center:
“The new gateway is one of the main access points to the historic district and accommodates a significant portion of incoming vehicle traffic.”
He added:
“The design includes three traffic lanes for incoming vehicles, as well as a dedicated exit route for vehicles without entry permits, helping regulate traffic and improve the efficiency of entry and exit management.”
Mahbouba emphasized that preserving the historical and architectural identity of Najaf was a key consideration throughout the design process.
“The gateway has been designed in harmony with the city’s traditional urban fabric, using architectural and decorative materials that reflect the religious and historical significance of Najaf’s historic district.”
He further noted:
“The project also includes the construction of 10 service and administrative rooms, providing suitable facilities for security personnel and service staff, improving operational efficiency, staff accommodation, and daily management.”
He concluded by explaining that the new gateway will be equipped with an advanced electronic control system, including surveillance cameras and the latest security and technical equipment. This integrated system will support modern security and service requirements while ensuring efficient traffic management and enhanced protection in accordance with the highest standards.
The project forms part of the Holy Alawi Shrine’s ongoing efforts to develop the infrastructure of Najaf’s historic district while preserving its architectural heritage and meeting the growing needs of pilgrims and residents of the holy city.
