Fadak Farm Project: A New Step by the Alawi Holy Shrine Toward Self-Sufficiency

The Fadak Farm project at the Alawi Holy Shrine is a major step toward self-sufficiency.

The teams working on the Fadak Farm project, which falls under the Alawi Holy Shrine’s Investment Authority, have announced that they’re continuing the barley harvest. This move is part of a strategic plan to support livestock farming and achieve self-sufficiency.

Seasonal Harvest

The head of the Fadak Farm project, Mustafa Hasan Dolab, told the shrine’s news center:

“The barley harvest for the current season has begun, to be used as feed for the sheep and cattle farming units. This is part of an integrated plan to support livestock production.”

Development-Focused Plans

He added:

“The total cultivated area is about 2,750 hectares, including barley and forage wheat. Right now, wheat is being grown on a small scale, experimentally. Next season, we’ll expand agricultural operations by increasing the land used for barley and wheat, as well as boosting dry alfalfa production to strengthen livestock feed.”

Integrated Projects

He went on:

“This farm has its own animal feed production plant to meet the needs of the livestock units. There’s also a liquid fertilizer plant operating here. The goal is to reach self-sufficiency and sell any surplus to the local market. On top of that, there are other projects here, like a dairy cow unit, a sheep farming unit, a greenhouse vegetable production project, and an orchard project with date palms and fruit trees.”

Modern Technologies

He added that the farm has a central nursery for producing all kinds of seedlings and trees, including ornamentals, fruit trees, shade trees, and seasonal flowers. This helps with agricultural diversity and production sustainability. He also said the farm uses advanced irrigation systems like fixed and center-pivot sprinklers, with solar energy as the primary power source—a move aimed at protecting the environment and expanding the use of clean energy.

Finally, it’s worth noting that the Fadak Farm project is one of the most important pioneering initiatives in modern agriculture and agricultural investment in Iraq. It brings together a range of crop and livestock production projects, working to support the local economy and strengthen food security.
