The Ghadir Sermon: The Quran Manifest in Proclaiming the Wilayah of Amir al‑Muminin

The Ghadir sermon, delivered by the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him and his family), is a deep tapestry woven from verses of the Holy Quran. In it, the wilayah of Amir al‑Muminin (peace be upon him) is laid out clearly and explicitly, grounded in the very words of Allah.

The event of Ghadir Khumm is a turning point in Islamic history. There, by divine command, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) announced the succession of Amir al‑Muminin (peace be upon him).And his one‑hour sermon at Ghadir is, more than anything else, proof of the unbreakable bond between religion, wilayah, and the Qur’an. In that sermon, the Prophet (peace bupon him and his family) recited and interpreted various surahs and verses, revealing to the world the lofty station of the wilayah and Imamate of Amir al‑Muminin (peace be upon him). This sermon not only explains the core message of Ghadir but also stands as a Qur’anic document affirming the truth of Amir al‑Muminin ‘s wilayah.

Qur’anic Verses in the Ghadir Sermon

In the Ghadir sermon, the Final Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) cited numerous Quranic verses to explain the divine legitimacy of Amir al‑Muminin ‘s wilayah, leaving no excuse for the community. Below are all those verses, with their Arabic text and English translation:

 

  1. Surah al‑Buruj (85):13
   إِنَّهُ هُوَ يُبْدِئُ وَيُعِيدُ

“Indeed, it is He who originates and repeats.”

 

  1. Surah al‑An’am (6):103
   وَهُوَ يُدْرِكُ الْأَبْصَارَ وَهُوَ اللَّطِيفُ الْخَبِيرُ

“Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives vision; and He is the Subtle, the Aware.”

 

  1. Surah al‑A’raf (7):54
   يُغْشِي اللَّيْلَ النَّهَارَ يَطْلُبُهُ حَثِيثًا

“He covers the night with the day, chasing it rapidly.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Ikhlas (112):4
   وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ

“Nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Mulk (67):1
   تَبَارَكَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ الْمُلْكُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

“Blessed is He in whose hand is the kingdom, and He is over all things competent.”

(The sermon quotes part: “To Him belongs the kingdom, to Him belongs all praise…”)

“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so have the believers. All of them have believed in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers, saying, ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’ And they say, ‘We hear and we obey.'”

 

  1. Surah al‑Ma’idah (5):67 – Verse of Proclamation
   يَا أَيُّهَا الرَّسُولُ بَلِّغْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلْ فَمَا بَلَّغْتَ رِسَالَتَهُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ

“O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people.”

   إِنَّمَا وَلِيُّكُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَهُمْ رَاكِعُونَ

“Your ally is none but Allah, His Messenger, and those who believe, those who establish prayer and give zakah while bowing (in prayer).”

   يَقُولُونَ بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ مَا لَيْسَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ

“They say with their tongues what is not in their hearts.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Nur (24):15
    تَحْسَبُونَهُ هَيِّنًا وَهُوَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ عَظِيمٌ

“You considered it insignificant, but it was, in the sight of Allah, tremendous.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Tawbah (9):61
    وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ ۚ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ ۚ وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ

“And among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, ‘He is all ears.’ Say, ‘He is good for you. He believes in Allah and trusts the believers, and is a mercy to those of you who believe.’ And those who hurt the Messenger of Allah will have a painful punishment.”

 

  1. Surah Ya‑Sin (36):12
    وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ فِي إِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ

“And all things We have enumerated in a clear Imam (Imam Mubin).”

 

  1. Surah al‑Ma’idah (5):54
    يُجَاهِدُونَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَلَا يَخَافُونَ لَوْمَةَ لَائِمٍ

“They strive in the cause of Allah and do not fear the blame of any critic.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Talaq (65):8
    وَعَذَّبْنَاهَا عَذَابًا نُكْرًا

“…and We punished them with a severe punishment.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Kahf (18):87
    أَمَّا مَنْ ظَلَمَ فَسَوْفَ نُعَذِّبُهُ ثُمَّ يُرَدُّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ فَيُعَذِّبُهُ عَذَابًا نُكْرًا

“As for he who wrongs, we will punish him, then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment.”

    فَاتَّقُوا النَّارَ الَّتِي وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ ۖ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَافِرِينَ

“Fear the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.”

    وَلْتَنْظُرْ نَفْسٌ مَا قَدَّمَتْ لِغَدٍ ۖ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ

“Let every soul look to what it has sent ahead for tomorrow, and fear Allah.”

    فَتَزِلَّ قَدَمٌ بَعْدَ ثُبُوتِهَا... إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

“…so a foot may slip after it was firm… Indeed, Allah is Aware of what you do.”

    هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ مِنْهُ آيَاتٌ مُحْكَمَاتٌ هُنَّ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ وَأُخَرُ مُتَشَابِهَاتٌ ۖ فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ ابْتِغَاءَ الْفِتْنَةِ وَابْتِغَاءَ تَأْوِيلِهِ ۖ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ تَأْوِيلَهُ إِلَّا اللَّهُ ۗ وَالرَّاسِخُونَ فِي الْعِلْمِ يَقُولُونَ آمَنَّا بِهِ كُلٌّ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَبِّنَا

“It is He who has sent down to you the Book. In it are verses that are precise — they are the foundation of the Book — and others that are ambiguous. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they follow what is ambiguous seeking discord and seeking its interpretation. And no one knows its interpretation except Allah and those firmly grounded in knowledge…”

    مَا يُبَدَّلُ الْقَوْلُ لَدَيَّ

“The word is not changed with Me.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Ma’idah (5):3 – Verse of the Completion of Religion
    الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا

“Today I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and have approved for you Islam as a religion.”

    إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الْإِسْلَامُ

“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam.”

    وَمَنْ يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الْإِسْلَامِ دِينًا فَلَنْ يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ

“And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.”

    فَأُولَٰئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَأُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ

“Those have lost their deeds in this world and the Hereafter, and they will be companions of the Fire, abiding therein eternally.”

    لَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمْ يُنْظَرُونَ

“The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.”

“So believe in Allah, His Messenger, and the light which We have sent down.”

    وَاتَّبَعُوا النُّورَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ مَعَهُ

“…and follow the light that was sent down with him.”

    مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ نَطْمِسَ وُجُوهًا فَنَرُدَّهَا عَلَىٰ أَدْبَارِهَا أَوْ نَلْعَنَهُمْ كَمَا لَعَنَّا أَصْحَابَ السَّبْتِ

“Before We obliterate faces and turn them backward, or curse them as We cursed the Sabbath‑breakers.”

    وَمَا مُحَمَّدٌ إِلَّا رَسُولٌ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ الرُّسُلُ ۚ أَفَإِنْ مَاتَ أَوْ قُتِلَ انْقَلَبْتُمْ عَلَىٰ أَعْقَابِكُمْ ۚ وَمَنْ يَنْقَلِبْ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَنْ يَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا ۗ وَسَيَجْزِي اللَّهُ الشَّاكِرِينَ

“Muhammad is not but a messenger. Other messengers have passed away before him. So if he died or was killed, would you turn back on your heels? And he who turns back on his heels will not harm Allah at all; and Allah will reward the grateful.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Hujurat (49):17
    يَمُنُّونَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ أَسْلَمُوا ۖ قُلْ لَا تَمُنُّوا عَلَيَّ إِسْلَامَكُمْ ۖ بَلِ اللَّهُ يَمُنُّ عَلَيْكُمْ أَنْ هَدَاكُمْ لِلْإِيمَانِ

“They consider it a favor to you that they have submitted. Say, ‘Do not consider your submission a favor to me. Rather, Allah has bestowed a favor upon you by guiding you to faith.'”

    ذَٰلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمُ اتَّبَعُوا مَا أَسْخَطَ اللَّهَ وَكَرِهُوا رِضْوَانَهُ فَأَحْبَطَ أَعْمَالَهُمْ

“That is because they followed what angered Allah and disliked His pleasure, so He rendered their deeds worthless.”

    يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِنْ نَارٍ وَنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنْتَصِرَانِ

“There will be sent upon you a flame of fire and smoke, and you will not defend yourselves.”

    إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِالْمِرْصَادِ

“Indeed, your Lord is in observation.”

    وَجَعَلْنَاهُمْ أَئِمَّةً يَدْعُونَ إِلَى النَّارِ ۖ وَيَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لَا يُنْصَرُونَ

“And We made them leaders inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.”

    إِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ فِي الدَّرْكِ الْأَسْفَلِ مِنَ النَّارِ

“Indeed, the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths of the Fire.”

    لِيَذَرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَىٰ مَا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّىٰ يَمِيزَ الْخَبِيثَ مِنَ الطَّيِّبِ ۗ وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيُطْلِعَكُمْ عَلَى الْغَيْبِ

“…so that Allah may separate the wicked from the good. And Allah would not inform you of the unseen.”

    أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الْأَوَّلِينَ (16) ثُمَّ نُتْبِعُهُمُ الْآخِرِينَ (17) كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ (18) وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ (19)

“Did We not destroy the earlier peoples? Then We will follow them with the later ones. Thus do We deal with the criminals. Woe that Day to the deniers!”

    وَأَنَّ هَٰذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ

“And this is My straight path, so follow it; and do not follow other ways, for they will disperse you from His way.”

    وَمِمَّنْ خَلَقْنَا أُمَّةٌ يَهْدُونَ بِالْحَقِّ وَبِهِ يَعْدِلُونَ

“And among those We created is a nation that guides by truth and thereby establishes justice.”

    فَإِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ

“Indeed, the party of Allah is the victorious.”

 

  1. Surah al‑An’am (6):112
    وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَاطِينَ الْإِنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ زُخْرُفَ الْقَوْلِ غُرُورًا

“And thus We have made for every prophet enemies — devils from mankind and jinn — inspiring one another with decorative speech in delusion.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Mujadilah (58):22
    لَا تَجِدُ قَوْمًا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ

“You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger.”

 

  1. Surah al‑An’am (6):82
    الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَمْ يَلْبِسُوا إِيمَانَهُمْ بِظُلْمٍ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمُ الْأَمْنُ وَهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ

“Those who believe and do not mix their faith with wrongdoing — those will have security, and they are rightly guided.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Hujurat (49):15
    إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَرْتَابُوا

“The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then have not doubted.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Hijr (15):46
    ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ آمِنِينَ

“Enter it in peace, secure.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Zumar (39):73
    حَتَّىٰ إِذَا جَاءُوهَا وَفُتِحَتْ أَبْوَابُهَا وَقَالَ لَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ طِبْتُمْ فَادْخُلُوهَا خَالِدِينَ

“Until when they reach it and its gates are opened, its keepers will say, ‘Peace be upon you; you have become pure, so enter it to abide eternally therein.'”

    فَأُولَٰئِكَ يَدْخُلُونَ الْجَنَّةَ يُرْزَقُونَ فِيهَا بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

“Those will enter Paradise, provided for therein without account.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Inshiqaq (84):12-13
    (12) وَيَصْلَىٰ سَعِيرًا (13) إِنَّهُ كَانَ فِي أَهْلِهِ مَسْرُورًا

“And will burn in a Blaze. Indeed, he had been among his people in happiness.” (Verse 12 quoted as “he will enter the Blaze”.)

 

  1. Surah al‑Mulk (67):7
    إِذَا أُلْقُوا فِيهَا سَمِعُوا لَهَا شَهِيقًا وَهِيَ تَفُورُ

“When they are thrown into it, they hear its roaring as it boils over.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Furqan (25):12
    إِذَا رَأَتْهُمْ مِنْ مَكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ سَمِعُوا لَهَا تَغَيُّظًا وَزَفِيرًا

“When it sees them from a distant place, they will hear its raging and roaring.”

 

  1. Surah al‑A’raf (7):38
    كُلَّمَا دَخَلَتْ أُمَّةٌ لَعَنَتْ أُخْتَهَا ۖ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا ادَّارَكُوا فِيهَا جَمِيعًا

“Every time a nation enters, it will curse its sister until, when they have all overtaken one another within it…”

 

  1. Surah al‑Mulk (67):8
    تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ ۖ كُلَّمَا أُلْقِيَ فِيهَا فَوْجٌ سَأَلَهُمْ خَزَنَتُهَا أَلَمْ يَأْتِكُمْ نَذِيرٌ

“It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, ‘Did no warner come to you?'”

 

  1. Surah al‑Mulk (67):12
    إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ

“Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.”

“I am only a warner and a bringer of good tidings to a people who believe.”

“You are only a warner, and for every people there is a guide.”

    إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُبَايِعُونَكَ إِنَّمَا يُبَايِعُونَ اللَّهَ يَدُ اللَّهِ فَوْقَ أَيْدِيهِمْ

“Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you are only pledging allegiance to Allah. The hand of Allah is above their hands.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Baqarah (2):158 – Verse of Safa and Marwah
    إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ۚ وَمَنْ تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌ

“Indeed, as‑Safa and al‑Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘Umrah, there is no blame upon him to walk between them. And whoever volunteers good — then indeed, Allah is Appreciative and Knowing.”

    وَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَارْكَعُوا مَعَ الرَّاكِعِينَ

“Establish prayer, give zakah, and bow with those who bow.”

    الَّذِينَ إِنْ مَكَّنَّاهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَمَرُوا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَنَهَوْا عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ

“Those who, if We give them authority in the land, establish prayer, give zakah, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong.”

    وَجَعَلَهَا كَلِمَةً بَاقِيَةً فِي عَقِبِهِ

“And he made it a lasting word among his descendants.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Hajj (22):1
    إِنَّ زَلْزَلَةَ السَّاعَةِ شَيْءٌ عَظِيمٌ

“Indeed, the quaking of the Hour is a terrible thing.”

 

  1. Surah al‑Isra’ (17):96
    قُلْ كَفَىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهِيدًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ

“Say, ‘Sufficient is Allah as a witness between me and you.'”

    مَنِ اهْتَدَىٰ فَإِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِي لِنَفْسِهِ ۖ وَمَنْ ضَلَّ فَإِنَّمَا يَضِلُّ عَلَيْهَا

“Whoever is guided is only guided for his own soul, and whoever goes astray only goes astray against it.”

    الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَانَا لِهَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِيَ لَوْلَا أَنْ هَدَانَا اللَّهُ

“Praise be to Allah, who guided us to this. We would never have been guided if Allah had not guided us.”

    وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا

“And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly achieved a great attainment.”

    (20) الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَهَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ بِأَمْوَالِهِمْ وَأَنْفُسِهِمْ أَعْظَمُ دَرَجَةً عِنْدَ اللَّهِ ۚ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ 

    (21) يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنْهُ وَرِضْوَانٍ وَجَنَّاتٍ لَهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُقِيمٌ

“Those who have believed, emigrated, and striven in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives are greater in rank in the sight of Allah. It is they who are the successful. Their Lord gives them good tidings of mercy from Him and pleasure and gardens of lasting bliss.”

 

  1. Surah Ibrahim (14):8
    إِنْ تَكْفُرُوا أَنْتُمْ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٌ

“If you disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely — indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”

    وَمَنْ يَنْقَلِبْ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيْهِ فَلَنْ يَضُرَّ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا

“And whoever turns back on his heels will not harm Allah at all.”
